Week 7, Race, Portrayal and Perception

This week, I wanted to come back around to some of the questions that come up in the Watkins and Nakamura readings.

What kinds of contexts and platforms seem to enable stereotyping of race and class? Why do you think that is? Related, how does the platform (e.g., in-game chat, Twitter, Facebook, blog post, academic paper, conversation with your boss) shape the tone, style and content of what you’re communicating?

The Nakamura piece talks about “gold farmers.” What kinds of labor do gold farmers participate in? What are they generating and for whom, and what do they get out of it? How are they portrayed in the game World of Warcraft?
