Where exactly is the Internet? This week, we’ll see where it actually resides. This is a topic that I get really excited about: my background is in architecture and infrastructure.
Note that there is a change in the readings this week: please read:
1. the New York Times piece, Power, Pollution & the Internet: Data Centers Waste Vast Amounts of Energy, Belying Industry Image. (This is also in your course reader.
2. the excerpt from Andrew Blum’s book Tubes located on MyWebSpace and at Learn@UW. (Click the link right there to get it. It is NOT in your reader, it IS REQUIRED.)
We will unfortunately not get to the Genevieve Bell/Paul Dourish reading, but I’ll discuss it and other things later this week in lecture.
